—-So what is your full vision?
—-そもそも、どうして洋服をつくろうと思ったんですか？
My full vision is, you know, I worked in a fashion industry for a long time like 20-30 years. Working for big company. I think I realized that I want to do something much bigger, like making clothes for people. I love, you know, I love clothes! But the business part of it is a struggle for me. So what I decided to do is do my own collection that has strong messages about an inclusion.
自分のブランドを起こす前にもこの業界で働いていたんだけど、わりと大きな企業に勤めていたんだ。2、30年働いた末に、何かもっと大きなことをやりたくなった。人々のために洋服を作ったりってね。僕は本当に服バカなんだよ。ただ、ファッション業界における商業的な部分が、どうも体質に合わなかった。だから、自分のコレクションをしようって決意したんだ。同時に、洋服を通じて、僕は人々の多様性について強く訴えかけようと思った。
—-Inclusion?
—-多様性と言うと？
Well, I want to do clothes that are for men, women, and people of all colors and transgender. You know, my full vision is to do, whatever I do whether it’s styling, video or music with someone, I wanna have the primary core behind it is to have a positive effect on people who normally experience oppression. So sometimes it’s difficult to translate into Japan because we have a different history here. In the US, there is a long history of slavery and a lot of racism, and homophobia discrimination, you know, and it’s always been very important for me to make everybody feel important into fight for the equality of people. But the way I do it is not in loving way, it’s in a very strong, hard way because I believe that, in order to wake people up and make people aware of a subject, you need to have a strong opinion, you know.
つまり、僕が作りたいのは、男や女という性別の垣根を越えた、そして住む国や肌の色に囚われない洋服なんだ。僕のものづくりの根底にあるのは、それが映像であれ音楽であれ、日常的に抑圧や差別に晒される人々を奮起させたいという想いなんだ。歴史的な背景に違いがある分、日本に置き換えて説明するのは難しいけれど、アメリカでは、奴隷制や人種差別のようなことが歴史上長く行われてきた。だから、そこで育った僕が重きを置くのは、いつだって人間の平等性の重要さを、人々に気付かせることなんだ。そして僕の場合、しばしば激しく攻撃的な姿勢でそれを表現することになる。愛で包み込むような方法じゃなくてね。なぜなら、人々に問題意識を持たせるために必要不可欠なのは、強固な意志であると信じているからなんだ。
—-Okay, so that is your brand concept?
—-つまり、それがあなたのブランドコンセプトということですか？
So because I’m Mexican American, all of my designing always been influenced by California “Cholo”, “Chicano” culture, but that is just my influence in construction in silhouette and some of the styling. But from season to season, it can change, but that’s been core foundation. ‘Chicano” styling. The spring delivery which is coming now, it has a very strong “Cholo” influence.
僕はメキシコ系アメリカ人だから、僕の作る洋服のデザインの根底にあるのは、カリフォルニアの『チョロ』や『チカーノ文化』なんだ。つまり、洋服のシルエットだったり、スタイリングだったりに表れてるってことだけど。そういったコアに沿って、シーズン毎に異なるテーマを設けているよ。2017SSコレクションに関しては、特に『チョロ』の影響が色濃い。
—-Can you explain “Cholo” for us?
—-『チョロ』というと、あまり馴染みが無いのですが……。
“Cholos” are,,, it’s slang kind of word for the style of Mexican American gang culture. So I was raised in a very small town in California and there is a lot of Mexican people lived there. So there is a lot of “Cholos” there and “Chicanos”, and that was just part of my heritage, my upbringing. So I’ve always loved that styling like,,, actually what you are wearing right now is sooo “Cholo”!!
『チョロ』は一種のスラングなんだけど、メキシコ系アメリカ人のギャング集団のスタイルを表すんだ。僕が生まれ育ったのはカリフォルニアの本当に小さな町で、そこには『チョロ』や『チカーノ』と呼ばれる人たちがたくさん暮らしていた。だから僕の深いところには、いつだって彼らがあるんだ。彼らのスタイルは最高だよ。……ところで、今日のきみのスタイリングなんて、まさに『チョロ』そのものなのを知ってる？
—-Really??
—-え、そうなんですか？
High-waisted, zoot suit pants, wide top, navy bottom, tucked in,,, it’s so “Cholo”, you know!! And it’s interesting because “Cholo” influence has been very large in fashion. VERY large in fashion. But it hasn’t very much been recognized. So, for example, the skate culture styling is 100 percent borrowed from “Cholo”. 100 percent! “Dickies”, long shorts, oversize tops, old English,,, all of that is “Cholo”. So skaters borrowed from “Cholos” and then brand like “Sttusy”, things like that, you know, copied. And “Cholos” came from “Pachucos”. “Pachucos”, which was a “zoot suit”, the high-waisted, preated long cord,,, and girls with big tits, mascara and black hair. “Zoot suit” turned into “Cholos”. I’ve always loved that most elegant look, a long navy or khaki trousers and a cream or white shirt. It’s the most elegant and simple. Black shiny shoes,,, you know. It’s perfect!! It’s all you need.
ネイビーのズートスーツパンツをハイウエストでタックインして、身幅の広いジャケットを羽織る。『チョロ』そのものだよ！面白いのは、ファッションの非常に多くの部分に、『チョロ』の影響が残っているってこと。信じられないくらい多くの部分にね。スケータースタイルなんて良い例で、彼らのスタイルの100％が『チョロ』から来てる。『ディッキーズ』のロングショーツに、ルーズなトップスに……どれを取っても。『チョロ』のスタイルから影響を受けたそのスタイルを、さらに『ステューシー』なんかが真似たわけだね。そして『チョロ』は、『パチューコ』のスタイルがその起源にある。男はプリーツ入りのズートスーツをハイウエストで穿いて、女は黒髪でマスカラを塗って、ハイヒールを履く。つまり、彼らこそ僕のスタイルの核なんだ。ネイビーかカーキのロングパンツに、白かクリーム色のシャツ、そしてピカピカの革靴。僕が愛するのはそういったエレガントなスタイル。それさえあれば、余計なものは要らないよね。
